Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've come across the term "lead magnet." But what exactly is that, and why do you need one for your business? Let's break it down.
In a nutshell, a lead magnet is something your ideal client wants and is willing to fork over their email address or phone number for. It's the digital equivalent of a Costco sample: gives potential customers a tantalizing taste of what it's like to work with you and inspires them to buy the full package.
In today's crowded online marketplace, it's harder than ever to stand out. And, because your social media accounts can disappear at any time, it's important to build a prospect list that you own. Problem is, there are so many shitty freebies flying around out that people are jaded, reluctant to give up their contact info. But a juicy lead magnet will:
1. Build your email list
2. Establish your authority
3. Qualify leads
4. Lay the foundation for an ongoing relationship
There's no one-size-fits-all here. A lead magnet can be anything from a solution call to an email mini-course to a downloadable PDF. It really depends on your business, your customer's needs and preferences, and similar factors. Here are just a few types of lead magnets to consider:
E-books and guides
Checklists and cheat sheets
Webinars and workshops
Templates and tools
Free trials or samples
Creating an irresistible lead magnet involves a few key elements:
1. Understand your audience – you can't just shoot in the dark. You need to know who you're talking to, what their goals are, and what's standing in their way. Your lead magnet needs to make your person feel seen and heard. This is not the same as poking them in the pain points (don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise), but you do need to make it clear you know what they ARE.
2. Deliver real value – not just a bunch of fluff that's a cover for a sleazy sales pitch. Don't waste people's time, it'll just piss them off and ruin any chance you might have had to build a meaningful connection. If you promise "10 steps to $10K months" you better give them the ten actual steps. (And you better be making $10K months yourself, otherwise you're selling results you don't have and that makes you an asshole. Don't be an asshole.)
3. Keep it specific – focus on ONE thing for ONE specific person. The end. Don't convolute things. If you have lots of different ideas – great! Make lots of different lead magnets. Try them out. See what performs best. But don't try and put it all into one thing.
4. Design matters – for f*cks sake make it pretty! If your Canva skills suck, spend a couple hundred bucks on a competent designer. If your persuasive writing isn't up to par, hire a copywriter. When you're a solopreneur you find yourself wearing all the hats, but your zone of genius is the thing you set out to DO. The life coaching, the funnel tech, the bookkeeping, the dog training. NOT the marketing (or any of the other stuff you're also doing.) Focus on the thing you do so well, and hire out the rest.
Once you have your lead magnet, it's time to promote it effectively:
Landing Page: Create dedicated, optimized landing page that highlights the benefits of your lead magnet and includes a simple sign-up form. Don't overthink or overcomplicate it.
Social Media: Use your social media content to create interest and drive traffic to your landing pages.
Pop-Ups and Slide-Ins: Strategically placed pop-ups or slide-ins on your website can capture visitor attention at the right moment. Use these carefully though – a lot of folks automatically close popups without reading them because they find them annoying.
Email Campaigns: If you already have an email list, send them your lead magnet too! It will help you guage their interest and you can ask them to share it with their networks too.
