Purpose: required by all email marketing platforms; improves deliverability and sender reputation
This is non-negotiable and should be the first step in email list-building. You cannot use a free email services like Gmail or Yahoo for email marketing. If you don't already own a domain for your business, then go get one today. You'll then need to configure the DNS records for email functionality.
Popular tools: Namecheap, GoDaddy, for domain registration; G Suite/Google Workspace, Zoho for hosting
Purpose: collect emails, send email broadcasts, and automate email sequences
This is also a non-negotiable. An email marketing platform is essential for managing your subscribers and staying compliant with email marketing regulations (CAN-SPAM, GDPR). These platforms handle subscriber management, automation, list health, and deliverability.
Some email service providers also include integrated landing page builders, so if you don't already have a website, this is perfect for getting up and running fast. If you DO already have a website on platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix, most email platforms offer integration options. This allows you to give your audience a seamless experience.
Popular email marketing platforms: Mailchimp, MailerLite, Constant Contact, ActiveCampaign, Flodesk.
Purpose: create beautiful lead magnets, social media graphics, and email opt-in images
For your first lead magnet, Google Docs or Google Slides work well if you want something quick and easily editable. But design capabilities are limited.
Canva and Adobe Express are intuitive, affordable, offer drag ‘n drop design convenience, plus have thousands of template options. Both platforms also let you share your freebies directly, which makes updates incredibly simple.
Recommended design tools: Canva (free and paid tiers), Adobe Express, Google Docs/Slides (for simple PDFs).
Purpose: Automatically deliver your freebie to new subscribers after they opt in
Once you’ve got a freebie you’re happy with, you need to create a reliable mechanism for getting it into people’s hands. This could be sending them to a Google Doc, hosting a PDF on the cloud, a video on YouTube, or using a dedicated file hosting service.
Once you've decided on that, you’ll create a welcome email (automated through your email platform) that fires off immediately once someone opts in (i.e. requests your freebie). This email should include a link to download/access your freebie and set expectations for ongoing communication.
File hosting options: Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube (for video content), Canva (for PDFs and graphics)
Purpose: create a dedicated, high-converting page to promote your lead magnet and collect emails
Most email marketing programs include basic landing page functionality. These pages won't live on your main website domain, but they'll get you started quickly. If you do already have a website, you can build a custom landing page using your website builder (Squarespace, Wix, WordPress) and embed an opt-in form from your email platform. This creates a seamless branded experience.
All-in-one platforms like Go High Level (or a white label version like Funnel Gorgeous, my personal favorite) combine email marketing, landing pages, and more in a single tool.
Landing page solutions: Built-in tools from email platforms, website builders (Squarespace, Wix, WordPress), all-in-one platforms (Go High Level, Funnel Gorgeous, Systeme)
Purpose: drive targeted traffic to your landing page and grow your email list
Once you've built your landing page and freebie, you need to promote it. (i.e. get eyeballs on it). If you don’t want to spend all day every day on social media promoting it, then invest in a scheduling tool to batch-create and automate your content. (Individual platforms like Facebook and Pinterest also offer scheduling options for professional accounts. All-in-one tools often include scheduling options too.)
You can also add a link to your social media profile/bio, your email signature, print marketing materials, business card, etc.
Social media schedulers: Post Planner, Hootsuite, Buffer, Later.

No, you don't need a website to start building an email list. Most email marketing platforms include built-in landing page builders that let you create opt-in pages without a website. However, having a website provides better branding and flexibility long-term and is the best way to make sure you're building a lasting brand in the AI era.
The most affordable email marketing setup uses free or low-cost tools: a domain from Namecheap ($10/year), Google Workspace or Zoho ($6-12/month), MailerLite or Mailchimp (free up to 1,000 subscribers), Canva free plan, and Google Drive for file hosting. Total monthly cost: approximately $15-25/month.
No, you cannot use free email services like Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook for email marketing. These services prohibit bulk sending and will block your account. You must use a professional email domain authenticated through proper DNS records and connected to an email marketing platform.
Setting up your complete email marketing tech stack typically takes 2-4 hours if you’re doing it for the first time. This includes domain authentication (30-60 minutes), email platform setup (30 minutes), creating your lead magnet (1-2 hours), building your landing page (30-60 minutes), and connecting everything together.
Now you understand the exact tech stack you need to start building an email list and reduce your dependence on social media algorithms or restrictions. You don't need expensive tools or complicated systems—just the right foundation.
